Mary Kom walked into the Bigg Boss 20 house this week, and the first person to have something to say about it wasn't Salman Khan. It was Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
In a video message played during the premiere run, Priyanka addressed the other contestants directly, half warning them and half just stating a fact. "Inka knock out na bhot bhari padta hai," she said, which needs no translation if you've ever watched Mary Kom fight. The line landed exactly how it was meant to, as a nudge to the house that they're sharing space with a six-time world champion, not a reality show archetype.
She had a separate message for Mary herself. "Mary bas aap jaisi hain waisi rahiye, khule dil se kheliye," Priyanka said, telling her to stay herself and play with an open heart, before adding that she was looking forward to watching the journey unfold.
The two go back more than a decade. Priyanka played the boxer in Omung Kumar's 2014 biopic Mary Kom, and by all accounts the prep wasn't casual. She trained in boxing for the role, spent time with Mary's family in Manipur, and worked at picking up her mannerisms rather than just her fight stance. That kind of homework tends to leave a mark, and this video message reads like proof the relationship outlasted the film's release.
What's notable is the format. This isn't Priyanka showing up on set or dropping a congratulatory post. It's a recorded message, seeded right into the Bigg Boss ecosystem, timed to Mary's entry and clearly meant to be shared and reshared as its own moment. JioHotstar's reality handle put it up, and the framing does double duty. It's a welcome for Mary Kom and it's content that keeps two names trending on the same day, one Bollywood, one boxing.
Mary joins a season that's already a fairly loaded mix. The current house includes Mahhi Vij, Kanika Mann, Amrapali Dubey, Aasif Khan, Qazi Touqeer, Kushal Tanwar, Arishfa Khan, Isha Rikhi, Rhiti Tiwari, Yung Dsa, Aman Gandhi, Uditi Singh, Rohed Khan and Love Gill. Actors, television regulars, digital creators, and now an Olympic medallist walking in with a reputation that precedes her by more than a decade.
Whether Mary Kom's discipline translates to how she actually plays the game is the thing the house will find out over the coming weeks. Bigg Boss 20 streams on Jio Hotstar at 9 pm, with the television telecast on Colors TV at 10.30 pm. How Salman Khan brings up the Priyanka message on Weekend Ka Vaar is the next thing to watch for.
