The first look poster settles who plays the Mahabharata warrior in Mahaveer Karna, but the film has quietly dropped its December 2026 release date for an unspecified 2027 window.
The wait to know who'd play Karna in Mahaveer Karna is over. The first look poster dropped Monday, and it confirms Raghava Lawrence in the title role, decked out in royal war attire with a sun emblem on his forehead, a nod to Karna's mythological status as the son of Surya. The tagline reads "Born A Hero, Destined A Legend."
That settles a question that had been sitting open since the project's title was announced back in August. Nobody knew who'd step into Karna's armour. Now they do, and the answer comes with a fair bit of star weight attached.
But the poster also carries a quieter piece of news. When the title was first unveiled, the makers had locked in a worldwide release date of December 4, 2026. This new poster doesn't. It simply says 2027, no specific date attached, which means the film has moved out of its original window. No reason has been given for the shift, not yet anyway.
Mahaveer Karna is directed by Ramesh Varma and comes from Pen Studios' Jayantilal Gada, alongside RV Studios and Sri Neeladri Productions. The pitch is an epic hybrid live-action project, something the makers are describing as a first-of-its-kind format for Indian cinema, and it's slated to release in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. That's a genuinely pan-India swing, both in scale and in the kind of production the team is promising.
Casting Lawrence as Karna is a bold call on paper. He's built his career on mass action and, more recently, horror-comedy, not mythological gravitas. But that's exactly the kind of swing a project like this seems to want, someone who can carry both the physicality of a war epic and the larger-than-life aura the marketing is chasing. The poster leans hard into spectacle, all armour and sun-god iconography, and it's clearly meant to signal scale before anything else.
What it doesn't signal is a timeline. Moving from a fixed December 2026 date to a vague 2027 window usually means one of two things in this industry, either the visual effects and hybrid live-action work is taking longer than planned, or the shoot itself hasn't wrapped. Given the format being promised, both are plausible. The makers haven't said which.
For now, fans have a face to put on Karna and a poster to pick apart frame by frame. The rest, cast beyond Lawrence, shoot schedule, an actual 2027 date, is still to come. Ramesh Varma's team will need to fill in those gaps before the hype the first look has generated starts to cool.
