The trailer for Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam lands today, and it comes with a reminder that some dates just don't fade. Rajkummar Rao, who plays Nikam in the film, put out a short video ahead of the drop talking about how 26/11 sits permanently in the country's memory as the date of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
Nikam isn't a household name the way Kasab's became, but he was the man doing the actual work in that courtroom. As Special Public Prosecutor, he led the case against Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman from the attacks, through a trial that played out under enormous public attention. Prahaar is built around that chapter of his career, and Rao's video framing suggests the film wants viewers to sit with the weight of the date before they even see the trailer.
Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films is producing, with Avinash Arun directing. That's a pairing worth noting. Maddock has spent the last few years alternating between horror-comedy franchises and heavier, true-event dramas, and this one falls firmly in the latter camp. Arun, known for handling restraint well on screen, seems like a deliberate choice for material this sensitive.
The cast around Rao is stacked. Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sikandar Kher and Tarun Sharma round out the ensemble, though the reports so far haven't detailed who plays whom. Ahlawat and Kher both carry serious dramatic weight, so expect the courtroom and investigation scenes to lean on that.
What we don't have yet, beyond the teaser tease, is any real sense of tone. Is this a slow legal procedural or does it open with the attacks themselves and build toward the trial? Rao's pre-trailer video only addresses the emotional register around the date, not the film's actual structure. That's presumably what today's trailer is meant to answer.
Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam is set to release in theatres on October 16. Given the subject, expect the marketing to stay careful and fact-forward rather than lean into spectacle, at least until the trailer's actually out and people can judge the tone for themselves.
For now, the big question is simple: does the film treat Nikam as the centre of the story, or does 26/11 itself end up pulling focus the way it tends to in anything connected to that date. The trailer, whenever it drops today, should make that clear.
