Vijay Deverakonda is playing the title role in Ranabaali, and the man who wrote the part says there was never really a second name on his list.

At the film's pre-release event, director Rahul Sankrityan laid out the thinking behind the casting in plain terms. "Vijay was the hero of my first film, Taxiwaala, and now he is the hero of my Ranabaali," he said. "When I conceived this story, I wanted a hero with the stature of a warrior. The answer to who that hero should be was Vijay Deverakonda."

This is Sankrityan and Vijay's second film together, coming years after Taxiwaala put the director on the map. The gap between the two collaborations has clearly not dented the trust. Sankrityan told the event that Ranabaali will show something audiences haven't quite seen from the actor before, pushing past the genre-hopping he's done so far into a role built entirely around physical and emotional weight.

The dialect is the part everyone's talking about. Ranabaali's character speaks in Rayalaseema, a register that's notoriously hard to pull off convincingly if you're not from the region. Sankrityan didn't dodge that difficulty. "Speaking in the Rayalaseema dialect is difficult, but you will be impressed by how beautifully Vijay delivers his dialogues as Ranabaali," he said, framing the performance as the thing that will separate this film from the rest of Vijay's filmography.

The trailer, already out, backs that framing up. It shows Vijay leading a rebellion against British rule, with Rashmika Mandanna playing a pregnant Jayamma who joins the fight rather than sitting it out. It's a period setting with stakes baked into both the politics and the domestic drama, and the dialect work is front and centre in the footage that's circulated since.

Online, the dialogue delivery has become its own talking point, with clips of Vijay's Telugu doing the rounds and plenty of debate attached to them, some of it generous, some of it not. None of that chatter changes what's actually been confirmed: the film, the casting, the dialect choice and the director's reasoning behind all three.

Sankrityan has also spoken about the weight of taking this genre on in the first place, saying at the same event that failing here would make it dangerous territory for anyone who tries it after him, and that Ranabaali, in his words, won't fail. That's a filmmaker putting his own name on the line alongside his lead actor's.

No confirmed release date has been attached to Ranabaali yet beyond the pre-release event and trailer drop. What's next is simple enough: a full trailer response, a release date, and then the actual test of whether a Rayalaseema warrior role reshapes how people talk about Vijay Deverakonda's range.
