Ranabaali just got a new release date and a teaser date in the same breath. Mythri Movie Makers announced on Sunday that the film, originally set for a September 11 release, will now hit screens worldwide on October 16. The teaser lands two days from now, on September 9.

The shift isn't small. A full month is a lot of runway to give up this close to a release, and it tells you the makers wanted more room to build the campaign around what's clearly being pitched as a big swing. The tagline on the announcement video reads "The legend of the cursed land rises," which is about as unsubtle a signal as you'll get that this is going for scale.

A period drama built on a real marriage

Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, who made Nani's Shyam Singha Roy, Ranabaali stars Vijay Deverakonda as what's being described as a rebellious chieftain, with Rashmika Mandanna playing his fiercely loyal partner, Jayamma. This is their third film together after Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade, but it's the first since the two actually got married earlier this year. That's not incidental marketing. Every glimpse released so far, including a birthday montage for Rashmika back in April, has leaned into their real-life chemistry as much as the on-screen story.

The setting is colonial India, though the two outlets reporting on the film don't fully agree on the timeline. 123telugu places the story between 1854 and 1878, while Filmfare puts it between 1876 and 1878. Either way, it's a 19th-century canvas, and the film is being sold as a brutal conflict against colonial rule, wrapped around a central romance.

Arnold Vosloo plays the antagonist, Sir Theodore Hector, which puts a recognisable Hollywood face opposite Deverakonda in what's shaping up to be the film's central face-off. Ajay-Atul are composing the score, and if the glimpse released earlier this year is anything to go by, the music is doing a lot of the emotional heavy lifting alongside the visuals.

Mythri Movie Makers, the studio behind the Pushpa films, is producing, with T-Series presenting. That's a pedigree that comes with expectations of scale, and going by the early buzz, that's exactly what the marketing is chasing. Fan chatter around the film has already started comparing this stretch of Deverakonda's career to his earlier, more effortless run, which puts extra weight on Wednesday's teaser to land.

For now, the wait is short. The teaser drops September 9. The film itself doesn't arrive for another five weeks, on October 16, giving the team a longer runway than planned to turn a delayed release into a bigger event.
