Ranabaali opens Friday. Vijay Deverakonda’s comeback hinges on it.
Vijay Deverakonda’s return to the big screen isn’t just another release — it’s a reckoning. After over a year since Kingdom (2025), he steps into Ranabaali, a period drama that marks his first on-screen collaboration with Rashmika Mandanna since their marriage earlier this year. The film, set against the backdrop of the 19th-century famine in southern India under British rule, reimagines history through the lens of a fictional savior.
Director Rahul Sankrityan describes it as an alternate-history film, where real events are reshaped by what might have been. Vijay plays the titular character, a man who rises to lead his people in defiance of colonial oppression. The trailer shows him as aggression personified: fierce, unyielding, driven by fire. Rashmika, as Jayamma, brings warmth and quiet strength to the role.
Their chemistry, long a draw for audiences, now carries emotional weight beyond romance. It’s about partnership forged in crisis. This isn’t Geetha Govindam or Dear Comrade. It’s a grander scale, a heavier tone, a different era.
For Deverakonda, it’s more than a comeback. It’s a pivot. His career is often split into pre- and post-pandemic phases. All his major hits came before 2020.
Since then, his films have struggled at the box office. While Rashmika has enjoyed a string of post-pandemic successes, Vijay hasn’t. Ranabaali needs to cross 88 crore in India, the gross of Geetha Govindam. To become his highest-grossing film. That number isn’t arbitrary.
It’s a benchmark. If it clears that mark, it also becomes the top-grossing film featuring both actors together. But the odds aren’t kind. The film opens on October 16, clashing directly with Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2.
The Dussehra window is crowded, competitive. And yet, the film arrives with momentum, its second single, “Kobali,” drops the day after the trailer launch. The question isn’t just about numbers anymore. It’s about whether the industry still believes in stories like this.
Whether audiences will turn out for a hero not defined by stunts or spectacle, but by sacrifice. The answer comes Friday. Then Saturday. Then Sunday.
