Ranabaali Trailer Pairs Vijay Deverakonda With a Familiar Messiah Arc

The nearly four-minute trailer for the October 16 release leans into spectacle and a Deverakonda-Mandanna romance, even as reviewers flag the chosen-one plot as well-worn territory.

The trailer for Ranabaali is out, and it runs long: three minutes and fifty-six seconds of famine, uprising and one man the film insists was sent by the gods to fix it. Vijay Deverakonda plays the title warrior. Rashmika Mandanna plays his wife, Jayamma. The film hits theatres October 16, and director Rahul Sankrityan has built his trailer around scale rather than surprise.

Set in 19th century South India, the story follows a fighter who turns against British colonial rule after watching his people go hungry under exploitative grain policies. Ranabaali and Jayamma run a guerrilla resistance against a British commissioner named Sir Theodore Hector, raiding supply lines and striking where the empire least expects it. It's a familiar shape for a period actioner, but the trailer sells it with scale.

Pinkvilla's trailer review, published Wednesday, called the production value and visuals true to the story being told, but stopped short of calling the cut itself a knockout. The review flagged a specific problem: the "chosen one" framing, complete with a tease of spiritual awakening, has been done to death across this genre lately, and the trailer doesn't do much to make it feel new. Fair criticism, though the review was also careful to note that judging the arcs properly will have to wait for the actual film.

What the trailer does land, per that same review, is the Deverakonda-Mandanna pairing. The two have shared screen space before, and whatever chemistry brought audiences back then seems to be intact here, now folded into a film that's pitching itself primarily as action. Expect the marketing to lean on that romantic thread even as the trailer itself stays focused on war and famine.

The bigger question mark is Arnold Vosloo. The actor, known to Indian audiences mostly from The Mummy, plays the antagonist, Sir Theodore Hector, and the trailer doesn't give much away about how he'll handle a role that needs to carry real menace opposite Deverakonda's screen presence. That's one of the things a ninety-second trailer simply can't answer.

Both leads have plenty lined up beyond this one. Deverakonda has Rowdy Janardhana with Keerthy Suresh, directed by Ravi Kiran Kola, originally pencilled for a December release though that date hasn't been reconfirmed. He's also attached to an as-yet-untitled project with Hi Nanna director Shouryuv, tentatively called VDxShouryuv, with Hesham Abdul Wahab on music. Mandanna, meanwhile, has Mysaa with director Rawindra Pulle due November 27, and her name keeps coming up for Raaka opposite Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone, though nobody's confirmed that one officially.

For now, all eyes are on October 16, when the trailer's promises get tested against a full runtime.
