Accepting the Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award from CM Devendra Fadnavis, the actress opened in Marathi before explaining why the honour felt personal in a way few others have.
Rani Mukerji didn't stick to English for her acceptance speech. At the 62nd Maharashtra State Film Awards, held at Ravindra Natya Mandir in Prabhadevi, she opened her remarks in Marathi, a language she doesn't typically use in public appearances, before switching over.
"Majhyasathi Maharashtra fakt ek rajya nahi. Maharashtra majhi janmabhoomi aahe. Majhi karmabhoomi aahe. Ani majhya ayushyacha ek avibhajya bhaag aahe," she said, telling the room that Maharashtra wasn't just a state to her but her birthplace, her workplace and an inseparable part of who she is.
The award itself, named after Raj Kapoor, was handed to her by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar and a room full of government officials and film fraternity members watching, according to Bollywood Bubble. Nearly three decades into a career built almost entirely out of Mumbai, Rani said the setting made the whole thing land differently.
"I think that's what makes this moment truly special for me since I'm receiving this recognition from my very own people and from the place I belong to," she said, per both Filmfare and Bollywood Bubble. "To receive an award named after the legend of Indian cinema Raj Kapoor ji is, in itself, hugely humbling."
She went on to describe Mumbai less as a backdrop and more as the thing that built her. "Mumbai has given me my identity. It has given me an audience. It has given me a career," she said. "So this award will hold a very special place in my heart because whenever I look at it, I will not just see an award. I will see my Mumbai, my Maharashtra."
Rani, whose filmography includes Black, Hichki, No One Killed Jessica, Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway and the Mardaani films, has built a reputation for playing women who don't wait around to be rescued. She touched on that too, per Bollywood Bubble, saying she has always tried to represent "the powerful girls and women of India" through roles that felt truthful rather than convenient.
By the end of the speech she'd turned the moment outward, dedicating the honour to the technicians, artists and storytellers who make the state's film industry run. "Those stories don't remain here," she said. "They travel from Mumbai to Maharashtra, from Maharashtra to India and from India to the entire world."
No word yet on whether the Marathi opener becomes a habit at future ceremonies, but it's the kind of gesture that tends to get remembered longer than the trophy itself.
