Rashmika Mandanna's next big swing isn't an action franchise. It's MS Subbulakshmi.

Trade reports out of Chennai on Monday say the actor has locked in to play the Carnatic vocalist in a biographical film directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the filmmaker behind Jersey and Malli Raava. 123telugu reported the casting as settled, though the film's own formal announcement, its pooja ceremony, first look and title, is scheduled for Tuesday evening in Chennai. Kamal Haasan is expected to attend.

The timing isn't a coincidence. September 16 marks MS Subbulakshmi's birth anniversary.

From Sai Pallavi To Rashmika

This project has been in the works for a while. Track Tollywood reported that talk of the biopic first surfaced back in June, when Sai Pallavi was the name being floated for the role. Somewhere between then and now, the frontrunner changed. Rashmika reportedly went through look tests before the makers settled on her, though neither actor's camp has laid out publicly why the casting shifted.

Anirudh Ravichander is on board to score the music. The production brings together Allu Aravind, Bunny Vasu and Rockline Venkatesh, working under the Geetha Arts, Rockline Entertainment and Bunny Vas Works banners, a combination with serious pan-India muscle behind it.

Why This Role Is Different

MS Subbulakshmi was the first musician in the country to receive the Bharat Ratna and the first Indian to perform at the United Nations General Assembly, back in 1966. She died in 2004 having spent decades as one of Carnatic music's defining voices and, for many, a cultural ambassador in her own right. Playing her isn't a matter of getting the accent right. It demands classical vocal training, a command of a very specific singing style, and the kind of restraint that action cinema rarely asks of its leads.

For Rashmika, that's precisely the point. Her recent run, Kuberaa, Sikandar, The Girlfriend, has kept her visible but hasn't quite delivered the performance-first role that resets how the industry sees her range. A biopic like this, if it lands, does that work in one shot.

It also arrives at a busy moment for her. She's attached to Rahul Sankrityan's Ranabaali opposite Vijay Deverakonda, their third film together after Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade, and to Thamma alongside Ayushmann Khurrana. Squeezing in months of vocal training and character work for a Subbulakshmi biopic between those commitments will be its own kind of test.

For now, everyone's watching Chennai. Tuesday's ceremony should settle the title, the first look, and whether the studio is ready to call this officially locked rather than merely reported.
