Horror reboots don't usually grow on their second day in India. Resident Evil just did.

The film added roughly Rs 4.70 crore gross on Saturday, according to trade estimates reported by Pinkvilla, taking its two-day total to around Rs 8.50 crore. That's up from an opening day of Rs 3.75 crore, which itself included Rs 50 lakh from Thursday night previews.

Do the math and Day 2 is up close to 25 per cent on Day 1. For a franchise reboot with no A-list Bollywood crossover pull, that's the number distributors actually want to see. Word of mouth, not opening-weekend curiosity, tends to carry a film like this into its second and third weekends.

The story itself sticks close to game lore. Set during the events of Resident Evil 2, it follows Bryan, a medical courier moving sensitive cargo through a snowbound Raccoon City on the night a viral outbreak turns the hospital run into a fight for survival. It's a smaller, more contained premise than the franchise's earlier big-cast outings, and going by the early trend, that containment seems to be working in its favour rather than against it.

Zach Cregger, coming off the horror credibility he built with Barbarian and Weapons, directs. Austin Abrams leads as Bryan, with Zach Cherry and Kali Reis rounding out the principal cast. This is being counted as the second reboot attempt for the Resident Evil film franchise lately, following the 2021 Welcome to Raccoon City relaunch that didn't quite land the way Sony would have liked.

Pinkvilla, which has been tracking the numbers day by day, frames the trajectory as pointing toward what it calls a success story for the film in India. That's still a projection, not a certified tally, and the outlet itself flags these as trade estimates rather than final numbers audited by any studio.

Still, the direction of travel matters more than any single day's figure at this stage. A film that grows on Saturday instead of correcting downward is usually a film that's found an audience beyond its opening-day base, the ones who show up because a franchise name is attached, not because anyone told them it's good.

The real test comes Sunday, when family and group viewing tends to either pad out a weekend total or expose a film that peaked too early. If Resident Evil holds anywhere close to Saturday's pace, its opening weekend gross in India should comfortably clear the Rs 13-14 crore mark. Whether that's enough to call it a genuine hit will depend on what the film cost to bring here and how steep its weekday drop turns out to be, numbers nobody's put on the table yet.
