Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan are back on a film set together, and this time the man behind the camera is Ritesh Batra, the filmmaker who gave the world The Lunchbox.

The project is called Long Years Ago, and according to Bollywood Mascot, it has already started filming in Mumbai. No release window has been announced, and the makers have stayed quiet on plot specifics beyond the broad strokes of the story.

What we do know: this is a family drama, built around the sort of silence that builds up over years and eventually demands a reckoning. A family that has avoided saying the things that actually matter, until avoidance itself becomes impossible. It's the kind of premise that doesn't need a twist. It needs performances.

Which is presumably why Batra went and got Saif and Vidya in the same frame again. The two go back to Parineeta in 2005, then Eklavya: The Royal Guard in 2007, both of which leaned on the kind of restrained, interior acting that Batra's films tend to ask for. This is their first time sharing a set since.

The cast gets an international addition too. French actor Mélanie Laurent, who Tarantino fans will remember as Shosanna Dreyfus from Inglourious Basterds, is making her Hindi film debut here. She's also known for Now You See Me and 6 Underground, and has directing credits of her own. What her character is, or how much of the film rests on her, hasn't been revealed yet.

Batra's own track record makes the casting less surprising than it might first look. The Lunchbox, with Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur, built an entire film out of a wrong delivery and two strangers writing to each other. He followed that with Our Souls at Night and Photograph, both quiet, both more interested in what people don't say than what they do. Long Years Ago, going by its premise, sits squarely in that lane.

On the production side, Batra is producing with Adeel Ahmed under their Poetic Licence banner, with Jyoti Deshpande backing the film through Jio Studios, and Good Chaos also attached. That's a reasonably heavyweight production setup for a film that, on paper, is a small, character-driven story rather than anything built for scale.

For Saif, this continues a run of choosing roles that don't follow a single pattern, something he's done across genres for a while now. For Vidya, it's another entry in a filmography that already includes Kahaani, The Dirty Picture and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, films that rarely repeat themselves either.

What's missing right now is almost everything a trade story usually hangs on. No release date, no character details, no first-look. Just a camera rolling in Mumbai and two actors who last worked together when phones still had keypads.

The wait, for now, is for the makers to say more.
