Selvi premiered to a full house at the Busan International Film Festival on October 9, 2026 — and didn’t just fill seats. It sold out. The Tamil-language debut from director Sailesh Rathnakumar, produced by National Award-winning actor Anjali Patil, made its world premiere in the Vision – Asia section, one of only two Indian films selected for the honour this year. That’s not just a nod. It’s a signal. The film, which follows Patil as Selvi, a migrant home-care nurse working gruelling 12- to 72-hour shifts, is already drawing attention beyond festival circuits. Its next stop: São Paulo, where it’ll screen at the 50th edition of the city’s international film fest. No release date yet. But buzz is building fast. The film’s editing was handled by A. Sreekar Prasad, a nine-time National Award winner, while sound design came from Anand Krishnamoorthi, the same man who won for Ponniyin Selvan: Part I. Supporting roles are played by Swathy Krishnan, Vinoth Kishan, and Archana Padmini. Co-produced by the Red Sea Fund and backed by Hong Kong Asia Film Financing, Selvi carries both prestige and backing. It’s not just a debut. It’s a statement. And if the momentum holds, it might be one of the few Indian films this year to cross over without needing a Hindi dub.
