Captain Smit Machchhar unlocked the cockpit door after being assaulted mid-flight, letting passengers overpower the attacker, and Bollywood has spent the week calling him a hero.
Captain Smit Machchhar is recovering in Abu Dhabi after surviving an attack inside the cockpit of Flydubai Flight FZ1073, and Bollywood has spent the last few days making sure he knows the country noticed.
According to Filmfare, Machchhar's Omani co-pilot launched a violent assault on him mid-flight using an emergency crash axe. Machchhar was badly hurt and lost a lot of blood, but he still managed to unlock the cockpit door from the inside. That let passengers and off-duty pilots on board rush in and overpower the attacker. The flight was diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Machchhar got initial treatment there before being airlifted to Abu Dhabi for more advanced care. His condition is being described as stable, though the full extent of his injuries hasn't been detailed publicly.
Shah Rukh Khan was among the film industry figures who reacted, telling Machchhar, as quoted by Filmfare, that he "stood strong when it mattered the most." SRK called it tough to stare down danger while putting your own safety on the line, adding, "But you did just that to protect those onboard and showed us what being a Captain entails." He described the act as a true display of courage and duty, said the country is proud of him, and wished him a speedy recovery.
He wasn't alone. Ranveer Singh called Machchhar "courageous" in his own post. Vicky Kaushal kept it short: "Braveheart! Capt Smit Machchhar." Sunny Deol went further, writing that the pilot showed "extraordinary courage and presence of mind when it mattered most," crediting him with helping avert a disaster and save lives, and signing off with a salute. Tamannaah Bhatia also acknowledged his actions on social media.
It's the kind of moment where Bollywood's reflex to respond online for once lines up with something that actually deserves it. A mid-air cockpit attack with an axe is not a small thing, and the fact that a badly injured pilot still found the presence of mind to get that door open is the detail every one of these posts keeps coming back to.
What happens to the co-pilot now, and what Saudi or UAE authorities say about the incident, is still playing out. For now, the attention is on Machchhar's recovery in Abu Dhabi, and on how a routine Flydubai route turned into a story that reached all the way to Mannat.
