Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut, Sigma, is on track to wrap under ₹10 crore at the Indian box office, marking a quiet end for a film that began with high expectations. The Tamil-language thriller, released on October 2 alongside Baththa and Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai, opened with ₹2.35 crore net — decent for a new release, but failed to sustain momentum. By its sixth day, the film had grossed ₹8.98 crore (net: ₹7.61 crore), according to trade reports. With just one week of uninterrupted theatrical run remaining before Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 takes over screens on October 15, the film now faces an uphill battle to surpass Sundeep Kishan’s previous solo lead, Mazaka, which earned ₹9.6 crore net in India during its 2025 run. That leaves Sigma needing an additional ₹2.39 crore to cross that threshold. A tall order given the steep decline after opening day. On its first Wednesday, the film earned only ₹71 lakh across 1,377 shows, with occupancy hovering at 17%. The drop suggests weak word-of-mouth and limited repeat viewing. The film was written and directed by Jason Sanjay, son of superstar Thalapathy Vijay, and produced by Lyca Productions. It stars Sundeep Kishan in the lead role, backed by Raju Sundaram, Shiv Pandit, Faria Abdullah, and Sampath Raj. The cinematography was handled by Krishnan Vasant, music composed by Thaman S., and editing by Praveen KL. While fans of Vijay were curious to see his son step behind the camera, that curiosity didn’t translate into sustained audience turnout. Jyothika, Vijay’s wife, shared a quiet Instagram post wishing Jason Sanjay success, but the numbers tell a different story. The film’s performance raises questions about the viability of star-son launches in a market increasingly driven by content and credibility over pedigree. Whether this marks a shift in how audiences evaluate debut directors, or simply reflects a misfire in timing and execution. Remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Sigma is likely to close its run just shy of ₹10 crore, falling short of both commercial benchmarks and legacy expectations.
