Jason Sanjay's directorial debut beat Vijay Sethupathi's Baththa and the Nivin Pauly-Soori release on day one, but fell just short of Sundeep Kishan's personal opening-day record.
Jason Sanjay's long-delayed directorial debut finally hit screens on October 2, and the numbers are in. Sigma opened to Rs 2.35 crore net in India, enough to win the day against two other Tamil releases crowding the long holiday weekend, Vijay Sethupathi's Baththa and the Nivin Pauly-Soori film Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai.
That's a solid start for what Koimoi describes as a small-budget production, and the curiosity factor around Jason Sanjay clearly played its part. He's the son of actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, now the sitting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, and the pressure of stepping behind the camera rather than in front of it hasn't been lost on anyone watching this release. Jason Sanjay spent weeks doing the promotional rounds, interviews in multiple cities, the full circuit, before the film finally made it to theatres after repeated delays.
The lead actor's own numbers tell a more layered story. Sigma marks the second-highest opening day of Sundeep Kishan's career as a solo lead, trailing only Michael, which had pulled in Rs 2.65 crore net on its first day. Sigma came within 30 lakh of overtaking that record. Close, but no cigar, at least not yet.
Here's the catch, though. Despite winning its three-film clash, Sigma didn't crack the top 10 opening-day numbers in Kollywood history, per Koimoi's tracking. Winning the weekend against a crowded field is one thing. Matching the all-time openers in a industry that has seen monster first days from its biggest stars is another conversation entirely.
Which brings up the only number that actually matters from here. Word of mouth. A 2.35 crore opening built on curiosity about a star's son turning filmmaker can evaporate fast if audiences walk out unconvinced, or it can snowball into a proper word-of-mouth hit over the following days. Sigma now needs the latter, especially with a long weekend giving it a four-day runway to build rather than just survive a Friday.
The film is written and directed by Jason Sanjay and produced by Lyca Productions, shot by Krishnan Vasant with music by Thamas S and editing by Praveen KL. Alongside Sundeep Kishan, the cast includes Raju Sundaram, Shiv Pandit, Faria Abdullah and Sampath Raj.
Whether Sigma turns into the kind of hit that justifies a producer's son choosing the chair behind the camera over a life in front of it will be decided over the next few days, as day two and day three numbers start rolling in against the same crowded Kollywood calendar.
