The cast member described hiding in a rose bush for hours during a police chase, an anecdote that left the podcast host in stitches days before Season 52 begins.
Ashley Padilla has a story for the ages, and she told it to Amy Poehler with zero shame.
On Tuesday's episode of "Good Hang with Amy Poehler," the "Saturday Night Live" cast member described getting picked up by police as a teenager after bolting from a party near a recent hit-and-run. Her explanation for what happened next: she spent roughly four hours crouched in a rose bush, hoping nobody would find her.
Someone did. Padilla was booked on obstruction of justice and resisting arrest, and by the time officers pulled her out, her mother had already arrived, driving her boyfriend's truck to the scene.
"She gets out and she's looking at me like [shakes head], talking to the cop and he's like, 'So, we found her in the rose bush,'" Padilla recalled.
What really got Poehler laughing, though, was the line Padilla says she delivered the moment she got hauled out of the shrubbery. According to Padilla, she told the arresting officers, "It's about time you motherf–kers caught me," and swears it made it into the police report.
Even Padilla couldn't get through the story straight-faced, joking that she'd carried on like she was performing for cameras that didn't exist. Poehler's read on it: nerves masquerading as swagger. "You doubled down 'cause you were like, nervous. And you were like, 'I'm going to go extra cocky.' I can relate," she said.
The charges didn't stick around. Padilla told Poehler she got the arrest wiped from her record after completing court-ordered therapy, a requirement she attended alongside her mother. Poehler, only half-joking, called that arrangement its own kind of punishment for the parent dragged along to sessions.
None of this is coming out of nowhere for Padilla, who's stepping into a bigger spotlight this week. She's part of the "SNL" cast for Season 52, which kicks off September 26 with Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson hosting. A rose-bush arrest story making the rounds days before her season premiere isn't the worst kind of pre-show buzz to have.
Whether Padilla brings any of that same nerve to Studio 8H remains to be seen. Brunson's monologue, and whatever sketch slots Padilla lands in the premiere, will be the next real test of how that energy translates to the show itself.
