Soori's Mandaadi hit screens across five languages on Wednesday, and by all early trade accounts the opening day numbers were healthy. Filmibeat Tamil reported that audience response has been strong enough that the film is being talked about as a potential mega hit for Soori, who's been building toward full mass-hero status since Viduthalai.

The premise is unlike anything Tamil cinema has tried before. A fishing village runs an annual sailboat race, and for most of the villagers it's tradition, something the town takes pride in. One man sees it purely as business. He's the villain. The hero, who's kept his distance from the village, comes back with a promise: build a team, win the race, bring the trophy home. What happens after that promise is the film.

That's where the reviews get complicated. Popular YouTube critic Blue Sattai Maran, in a review cited by Filmibeat Tamil, called the setting genuinely new for Tamil cinema but said the film falls back on a standard sports-drama template once the race actually begins. No real twists, he said, nothing that turns the story in an unexpected direction.

His sharper criticism is aimed at the race sequences themselves. The boats race a kilometre or two out at sea, he pointed out, and the film still runs a live commentary track over it, as if someone on shore can see exactly what's happening that far out. One character, played by Mahima, does watch through binoculars from a lighthouse, which at least makes sense. The commentary from the shore, Maran said, doesn't add up the same way.

He also singled out the makeup work as a persistent irritant through the runtime, calling it dull and questioning the choices made for Sathyaraj's look in particular. Camera work, though, he rated highly, and he credited the cast and crew for visible effort in shooting the race sequences.

His verdict lands somewhere in between. The last ten minutes work, he said, calling them the film's strongest stretch. But he raised a real question about whether two and a half hours of buildup earns that payoff, or whether the pacing asks too much patience of the audience before it gets there.

That's a more mixed take than the opening day box office chatter suggests, and it's worth flagging that Filmibeat Tamil's own framing of the film as a sure mega hit sits somewhat at odds with the critic's review it's citing. Trade numbers over the coming days, particularly how the film holds through its first weekend, will tell a clearer story than day-one collections ever do. For Soori, who's staked a fair amount on this leap from character actor to full-scale hero, the next few days of word of mouth matter more than the opening.
