Street Fighter hasn't opened yet, and the trade is already doing the math on whether it beats a 32-year-old record.

Early tracking numbers reported by Koimoi put the reboot on course for $30 million to $40 million in its North American opening weekend when it lands on October 16. That alone would make it the franchise's best debut ever. Worldwide, the number the industry is watching is $100 million. Clear that, and this becomes the highest-grossing Street Fighter movie of all time.

It's not a huge bar, honestly. The 1994 original, with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raúl Julia, made $99.4 million across its theatrical life and has sat at the top of the franchise table ever since, going by figures on Box Office Mojo. That film also had Kylie Minogue and Ming-Na Wen in the cast, which tells you how long ago this was. The 2009 follow-up, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, managed only $12.8 million worldwide and more or less buried the franchise for over a decade.

So the bar Jason Momoa has to clear isn't some billion-dollar Marvel number. It's a figure one decent opening weekend could realistically wipe out inside its first few days of release, assuming the tracking holds.

The India angle

For Indian audiences, there's an obvious reason to care beyond the Momoa factor. Vidyut Jamwal is part of this cast, alongside Noah Centineo, in what's being billed as the franchise's proper comeback after more than ten years away from screens. The film follows Ryu and Ken Masters, pulled back into the fold by Chun-Li for the next World Warrior Tournament, only to find the tournament forcing a reckoning between the two of them and whatever demons they're each carrying.

Whether an Indian action star in a Capcom adaptation translates into local footfalls on October 16 is anyone's guess at this point. But it does mean Street Fighter arrives here with a hook that most video-game adaptations don't bother building.

Worth remembering that these are early estimates, not final tracking, and studios have a habit of either sandbagging or overselling numbers this far out. Koimoi's own reporting flags the $30 million to $40 million range as an early read, not a locked number. Whether it holds will depend on reviews, which haven't landed widely yet, and on how much appetite there actually is for a fighting-game movie in a month already crowded with other big titles.

The real test starts October 16, when the opening weekend numbers come in from North America first and the rest of the world, including India, follows over the next few days. Until then, the $100 million target is just a number on a spreadsheet waiting to be either smashed or quietly forgotten.
