Sunil Kumar got it done in two minutes flat on Wednesday in Aichi-Nagoya. The Greco-Roman wrestler beat the Philippines' Callum Johnston Roberts 9-0 by technical superiority, not conceding a single point through the bout, and with that result he opened India's wrestling account at the Asian Games 2026.

It's his second Greco-Roman medal at the Games, which makes him the first Indian wrestler to manage that. The win came in the men's 87kg category and, per the Free Press Journal's report citing an agency feed, Sunil controlled the contest from the first whistle, piling on points while Roberts never found an opening.

India's day in Japan didn't stop there.

In shooting, Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai took gold in the mixed trap team event, and they didn't just win it, they rewrote the Games record while doing it. Their combined score of 34 went past the previous Asian Games mark of 30, set by Qatar earlier this year. Qatar had to settle for silver this time with 32, and China picked up bronze on 23.

It's India's first-ever gold in the Trap Mixed Team event at the Asian Games, and it arrives on the back of Neeru's individual trap gold earlier in the competition, which already made her the first Indian woman to win that event outright.

Archery delivered too. The women's compound team of Jyothi Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep beat China 238-234 in the final to take gold, and their score equalled a world record of 238 that South Korea had set back in 2014. Beating China in a final on their own turf of precision sport, and doing it while matching a decade-old world mark, is not a small thing for a team event.

Three disciplines, three medals of real weight, all inside a few hours of each other. For Indian wrestling specifically, Sunil's bronze matters beyond the medal table. The format has been thin on Greco-Roman success at this level for India, and having the same wrestler collect two medals across Games cycles gives the federation something to build a selection narrative around heading into the next continental and world qualifying windows.

The shooting and archery contingents, meanwhile, keep adding to what's shaping up as one of India's stronger multi-sport outings lately. Both the trap team record and the archery team's record-equalling score suggest India isn't just picking up golds, it's setting the benchmarks other countries now have to chase.

More wrestling weight categories are still to be decided in Aichi-Nagoya, and so is the men's compound archery draw. India will be watching both closely over the coming days.
