The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to storm theatres on November 20, and with it comes a quiet but sharp target: $900 million worldwide. That’s the number that’ll crown it the franchise’s biggest earner — just under the $865 million haul of Catching Fire, the 2013 sequel starring Jennifer Lawrence.
The film, which is a prequel to the original trilogy and a direct follow-up to The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, isn’t just chasing legacy. It’s trying to outdo it. And if early tracking holds, it might just do it. According to Box Office Mojo data cited by Koimoi, Sunrise on the Reaping is expected to open in North America with between $55 million and $65 million, surpassing even the 2023 film’s debut.
That momentum could be enough to push it past the $865 million mark, especially with strong international legs. The story centers on a young Haymitch Abernathy, chosen at 16 for the 50th Hunger Games, which coincides with the Quarter Quell’s brutal twist: double tributes from each district. Directed by Francis Lawrence, who helmed the last two films in the series, the movie leans into the franchise’s signature blend of dystopian dread and high-stakes spectacle.
