Taylor Swift didn't walk the red carpet at Monday's Emmys, but she still showed up on screen — as a rookie detective investigating her own whereabouts.

The pre-taped sketch, part of Mariska Hargitay's hosting duties for the 78th Emmy Awards, cast Hargitay as her Law & Order: SVU alter ego Olivia Benson, tasked by "the mayor's office" with cracking the night's biggest question: would Taylor Swift actually turn up at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles?

Hargitay's SVU squad went at it the way they figured real Swifties would, chasing numerology instead of facts. According to Deadline's account of the bit, the investigation traced the number 13 back to the show DTF St. Louis's nomination count, wound through Bad Blood, The Amazing Race and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and eventually landed on Swift's husband Travis Kelce. The Hollywood Reporter's version has the team counting Abbott Elementary's seven nominations and its upcoming sixth season instead, arriving at the same lucky number by a different road. Either way, the board pointed to Kelce and Sunday night football.

That's when Swift walks in as the new rookie, coffee cup in hand, cutting through her colleagues' theorizing. "Our perp has a clear MO," she tells them. "A lot of this doesn't fit the pattern, and I don't think everything is a clue... I think what we're going to be looking for is hiding in plain sight." She then rattles off a cryptic line, "saccharide, Aries, from the vineyard, north or south". That fans online have already started reading as a hint about her next project, though nobody involved has said that's what it actually means.

In character, Swift argues there's no reason for her to show up at a ceremony that already handed out her nominations. Her documentary The Eras Tour: The Final Show picked up five Emmy nods, she points out, but those categories were decided the week before. "She's probably gonna be sitting at home playing with those cats she's named after TV show characters," her detective says, holding her actual cat Olivia Benson, named for Hargitay's role, on camera.

The sketch's investigators eventually land on the real answer: the Chiefs were playing the Broncos at the same time as the Emmys telecast. Swift did skip the ceremony, and photos placed her at Arrowhead Stadium sitting next to Tom Cruise during Monday night's game.

The bit closes with Swift's character floating one more theory before shooting it down herself: "Maybe she's gonna do one of those cool, pre-taped sketch things to support the host." Which, it turns out, was exactly what happened.

Hargitay hosted the 78th Emmy Awards live from the Peacock Theater on NBC and Peacock. Whether that "saccharide, Aries" line means anything beyond a punchline is the next thing the internet has to argue about.
