After the paperwork window closes, the state’s MLAs will cast their votes for the Rajya Sabha seats. Balloting runs from 9 a.m. To 4 p.m. On the 16th, with counting kicking off at 5 p.m. The same day. Results are expected to be announced that evening, and the whole Rajya Sabha exercise should wrap up by 19 October.
The Legislative Council elections follow a similar rhythm. The same nomination deadline applies, and the same scrutiny and withdrawal dates are in force. Voting for the graduate and teacher seats will start at 8 a.m. On 23 October and finish at 4 p.m. Counting is scheduled for 27 October, and the final certification of winners will be completed by the end of the month, on 31 October.
A quirky detail: voters must use the violet‑coloured sketch pens supplied by the commission. The colour‑coding is meant to avoid any mix‑up with regular ballot pens and to keep the process tidy.
With the schedule out, the Model Code of Conduct has automatically kicked in for all the constituencies involved. Parties can now start mobilising their cadres, announcing candidates and rolling out local rallies without fear of breaching the code.
Why does this matter beyond the immediate seats? The ten Rajya Sabha members whose terms end in November 2026 will be replaced, shifting the balance of power in the upper house. More importantly, the council elections is a litmus test for the political climate ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. Parties are already eyeing the graduate and teacher constituencies – traditionally strongholds for certain regional outfits – as bellwethers for voter sentiment.
