The London-set film casts Shriya as a software company boss and Vemal as her employee, with a promised big comedy track built around Sathyan.
Vemal and Shriya Saran are sharing screen space for the first time, and the film pairing them, Sandakkari, has just been announced as headed to theatres soon.
No release date yet. The unit says it's coming, and that's about as firm as things get right now.
The story comes from Jeethu Joseph, with R. Mahesh directing. Punnagai Poo Geetha, who's also acting in the film, is producing. The setting is London, and the plot runs through a software company where Shriya plays a senior executive and Vemal works several rungs below her. Opposite temperaments, clashing egos, the kind of office friction that's supposed to tip into romance somewhere along the way. The makers are pitching it as a full-blown entertainer, part love story, part conflict, part comedy.
Sandwiched between them, literally, is comedian Sathyan, playing a character who keeps getting caught in the crossfire of their standoff. That track is being sold as the film's comic centrepiece, the Vemal-Shriya-Sathyan combination doing the heavy lifting on laughs.
The rest of the cast is a mix of old names and familiar faces. K.R. Vijaya is back on screen after a considerable gap, in a significant role alongside Geetha herself. Prabhu, Crane Manohar, Rekha (known for Kadalora Kavithaigal), Dev Gill (the villain from Mahadeera), Uma Padmanabhan and Mahanadi Shankar round out the ensemble.
Behind the camera, Amresh has composed the music, Gurudev is handling cinematography and Dinesh Ponraj is cutting the film. Aiyyappan takes care of art direction, Ganal Kannan choreographs the fights, and Habib has done the dance numbers.
For Shriya, this is a return to Tamil cinema in a lead role that leans on her old strength, the kind of glamorous, sharply written part she's been associated with since Sivaji made her a household name in the Rajinikanth universe. For Vemal, it's a shot at a romantic-comedy lead alongside a much bigger star name, a pairing that's unusual enough on paper to generate some curiosity on its own.
What's missing so far is the stuff that actually matters to audiences: a release window, a trailer, a first look at how Shriya and Vemal play off each other on screen. The announcement gives away the premise and the cast list in full, but keeps the timeline vague. Sandakkari is, for now, a film that exists on paper, with a producer and a director confident enough to call it a complete entertainer before a single promotional beat has landed.
Whether that confidence translates to theatres depends on what comes next: a teaser, a date, and the first real test of whether this workplace rivalry-turned-romance has legs beyond the press note.
