Trade trackers can't agree on exactly how Kunal Kemmu's spy comedy performed over its first three days, though everyone agrees the number isn't good.
Kunal Kemmu's spy comedy Vibe wrapped its first three days in theatres with numbers that depend entirely on who's counting. Bollywood Hungama has the weekend at Rs 6.63 crore. Pinkvilla puts it higher, at Rs 7.35 crore. Either way, it's a soft start for a film that needed a stronger one.
The two trackers agree on the shape of the weekend even if the totals differ. Vibe opened at Rs 1.65 crore on Friday and climbed through Saturday, which brought in Rs 2.41 crore for a two-day tally of Rs 4.06 crore. It's Sunday where the numbers split. Bollywood Hungama has the third day at Rs 2.52 crore, keeping the upward trend intact and giving the film its best single day. Pinkvilla's Day 3 figure is Rs 2.85 crore, pushing its weekend total closer to Rs 7.35 crore.
Pinkvilla was blunt about what that means for the film. It called the collections a low opening, to say the least, and pointed to average word-of-mouth as the reason the film is struggling. Bollywood Hungama's read was gentler, noting the steady climb across three days as encouraging and calling the base reasonable heading into the weekdays.
Both sides agree on one thing worth flagging. Vibe is outperforming its rival release, Daayra, which opened the same weekend and has been stuck well below it. That's a low bar to clear, and Pinkvilla was clear that Vibe needs to show much better trends from here to have anything resembling a respectable finish.
Kemmu directs, writes and co-produces the film, and also stars as one half of a pair of best friends, Hardik and Bugs, whose disastrous planetarium date spirals into a secret operation run by a mysterious figure called Madam H. The story takes them from Mumbai to Bangkok, with the film's marketing leaning hard on the mismatched-buddies chaos of that setup. Sparsh Shrivastava, Preity Zinta, Vanshika Dhir, Yashpal Sharma and Dinesh Lal Yadav round out the cast.
Whichever weekend number you pick, the real test starts Monday. Weekday collections for a comedy with this kind of soft opening tend to fall off fast unless word-of-mouth turns, and nothing in either report suggests that's happening yet. The next few days of trade figures will settle whether Vibe limps to a modest lifetime total or drops off the charts entirely, and whether Bollywood Hungama's optimism or Pinkvilla's skepticism was closer to the mark.
