Vishwak Sen’s Cult Movie Box Office Day 1: ₹1.30 Crore Worldwide, Low Buzz, Cult Potential?
Vishwak Sen’s Cult opened on Friday, October 30, 2026, with a worldwide gross of ₹1.30 crore, according to Sacnilk’s box office tracking estimates. The Telugu psychological thriller — written, directed, and starring the actor, collected ₹95 lakh net in India across 1,240 screens, with overseas markets contributing an additional ₹20 lakh.
The film’s average occupancy stood at 22%, and its per-screen earnings averaged ₹7,661. Footfall was estimated at 93,932. The movie, which blends crime, action, suspense, and slasher horror, follows a group of college friends whose weekend getaway turns deadly when a masked killer begins targeting them one by one. As paranoia sets in and trust collapses, the survivors must uncover who’s behind the attacks while trying to stay alive.
It marks Vishwak Sen’s debut as a writer-director, a triple role he has taken on for this project under the Tarak Cinemas banner, produced by Sandeep Kakarala. The technical team includes Ravi Basrur on music, known for KGF and Salaar, Aravind Viswanathan as cinematographer, Ravi Teja Girijala on editing, and Tharun Bhascker handling dialogues.
Production design was by Arvind Mule, stunts choreographed by Karunakar and Joshua, sound design by Sync Cinema, and post-production handled at Annapurna Studios. Supporting cast includes Gayatri Bharadwaj, Tarak Ponnapa, Murali Sharma, Srikanth Iyenger, Karthikeya, Anirudh Bhaskar, EZY, Yagnya Turlapati, Kabeer Bhartiya, and Vishak Nair. Despite being marketed as India’s first slasher thriller, a genre that typically draws niche but passionate audiences, the film failed to generate strong pre-release interest.
Track Tollywood described the opening as a ‘shocking low’ for a Vishwak Sen project, especially one he personally authored and helmed. The actor, once seen as one of Telugu cinema’s most promising young leads with a strong youth following, has faced a string of commercial setbacks lately. This release adds to that trend.
The film held its ground on October 30 despite several smaller releases shifting dates to avoid competition from Venkatesh and Trivikram’s Aadarsha Kutumbam, which itself opened below expectations. Without strong word of mouth or positive reviews to drive momentum, the path to recovery looks steep. A solid jump on Saturday and Sunday will be crucial.
But with such a weak start and limited buzz, the chances of turning it into a mainstream success appear slim. Still, the term “cult” lingers, not because of numbers, but because of how people are reacting online. Fans are already sharing behind-the-scenes clips, dissecting the film’s tone, and defending its boldness.
Some compare it to cult sci-fi films that were dismissed at first but later embraced. Whether Cult becomes a cult classic remains uncertain. But if it does, it won’t be because of box office figures. It’ll be because of the conversation it sparks.
The next 48 hours will decide whether it fades, or finds its audience.
