Yami Gautam Dhar is stepping into a role that’s less about restraint and more about revelry. In Nayyi Navelli, the upcoming fantasy family entertainer from Balaji Mohan, she plays Mohini — a newlywed bahu who arrives in a Meerut household with calm in her stride and chaos in her wake. The film, set for release on October 16, isn’t just another entry in the ever-expanding Indian genre of domestic witch tales. It’s a full-throttle romp where comedy, dance, and instinctive humour take centre stage. And Yami? She’s not holding back. 'I think audiences will see a side of me that is lighter, more spontaneous and a lot more playful,' she told Filmfare ahead of the release. 'She gave me the freedom to let go of some of that control that you naturally have as an actor.' That’s a rare admission from an actress known for layered performances. But Mohini isn’t about depth, it’s about momentum. Physicality. Mischief. The kind of role where you don’t overthink the punchline, you just land it. The dancing alone. Choreographed by Vijay Ganguly and scored by G V Prakash Kumar, was described as 'another amazing experience'. The music, she said, has a 'playful, infectious quality' that made her want to just move. No filters. No second-guessing. Just joy. And yes, there’s a twist: the brother-in-law suspects Mohini might be a daayan. But the real magic lies in how she defies expectation. Not through spells, but through sheer, unguarded fun. The film, produced under Amazon MGM Studios and Colour Yellow Productions, also features Adinath Kothare, Mita Vashisht, Sonal Jha, and Sunita Rajwar. With its blend of folklore and farce, Nayyi Navelli could be the surprise hit of the season. Or just the one where Yami finally let herself laugh out loud on screen. Either way, it’s coming to theatres this Thursday.
