At her first big public event since the National Award, Sushmita Mukherjee told the actress her long arms match Lord Rama's, and her mother agrees already.
Yami Gautam walked into a Mumbai multiplex on Tuesday to roughly 250 dhols going off at once. That's the scale the Nayyi Navelli team pulled off for her, and it wasn't just theatre. This was Yami's first big public appearance since she picked up the National Award, and the producers clearly wanted the moment to feel like one.
The cast turned up in force. Adinath Kothare, Sushmita Mukherjee and Mita Vashisht joined Yami on stage, with producers Nikhil Madhok, Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma standing alongside director Balaji Mohan for the trailer unveiling.
It was Sushmita who stole the moment, though, and not with anything scripted.
She opened by talking up the cast's chemistry. "All of us, playing family members, were very coordinated," she said, adding that the shoot had been warm enough off camera too. Then she turned to the crowd and asked if she could share something about her co-star. Yami's face did the talking before her mouth did. She looked curious, then alarmed, then blurted out, "No, no!"
Sushmita said she'd hold back. She didn't.
"I observed that she has long hands, which come up to her knees," Sushmita told the room. "Even Lord Rama had such long hands. It was called 'ajanubahu,' which is very lucky." She said she'd mentioned this to Yami directly, who reportedly turned shy and admitted, "Yeh meri maa ne bhi kaha hain," confirming her own mother has made the same observation. Sushmita wrapped it up by calling it a good omen for the whole film.
It's a small, strange, genuinely funny beat from what was otherwise a carefully staged comeback event, and it's the kind of thing that tends to outlive the trailer itself on timelines.
The bigger picture here is simple. Yami hasn't had a reason to do a splashy public event in a while, and the National Award gave the Nayyi Navelli team the perfect hook to bring her out with noise, dhols and a packed stage. Whether the film lives up to the build-up is a separate question, one that gets answered on October 16, when Nayyi Navelli hits cinemas. Until then, the ajanubahu line is probably going to follow Yami around every interview she does for the next two weeks.
