Amul India has found its next punchline in Mirzapur.

The dairy brand's social media team put out a topical creative this week calling it "MASKAPUR," a mash-up of the franchise's name and the humble bun maska. The image shows Pankaj Tripathi's Kaleen Bhaiya seated with the buttered bun in hand, done up in Amul's familiar poster style. The caption read: "Amul Topical: The Movie Mirzapur create waves!"

It's the kind of joke Amul has been making for decades, latching onto whatever's trending and folding it into a butter reference. This time it's a gangster saga getting the treatment, which says something about how far Mirzapur has traveled since it started as a streaming show.

The topical lands two weeks into the theatrical run of Mirzapur: The Movie, which opened in Hindi and Telugu on September 4. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film pulls together most of the franchise's familiar faces for what's being billed as an untold chapter in the Mirzapur world. Pankaj Tripathi, Divyenndu and Ali Fazal anchor the cast, with Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Mohitt Maalik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Pramod Pathak, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Shweta Tripathi and Sonal S Chauhan rounding out the ensemble.

Excel Entertainment's Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have produced the film, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani on board as co-producers. Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment are presenting it, marking the streaming-first franchise's proper jump to the big screen.

Whether MASKAPUR moves any needles at the box office is beside the point. Amul topicals work as a kind of unofficial cultural thermometer, they show up when something has enough mass recall to make the pun land without an explainer. Mirzapur clearing that bar, four seasons and a spin-off deep into its run, isn't exactly a surprise.

What's more interesting is the timing. The film has already had its moment with an AI-generated 80s-style photo trend that went around featuring the cast in retro looks. Between that and now a dairy brand riffing on its title, Mirzapur: The Movie is doing the thing every studio wants and can't manufacture on demand, staying in people's feeds without anyone having to pay for it.

The film continues its run in theatres, with its box office numbers from the second week yet to be tallied.
