The Tamil thriller 'Anbil Avan', directed by R. Karthikeyan and starring Ashok Selvan and Preethi Muthukumar, opened in theaters on October 2, 2026, and has already sparked debate among critics.

Anbil Avan Prashanth, a well-known film reviewer, shared his assessment on YouTube, praising the film’s visual aesthetics and soundtrack by Govind Vasantha. He called the lead pair ‘super’ and acknowledged the film’s strong start. However, he quickly pivoted to critique, stating that the story lost its grounding in the second half.

The central issue, according to Prashanth, lies in the film’s handling of logic. He questioned how two educated individuals — especially one with a background in law, would isolate themselves during a crisis instead of reaching out to friends or authorities. He highlighted a scene where an MLA is seen skinning a tiger, calling it a ‘shocking’ and ‘unrealistic’ detail that breaks immersion.

He further noted the inclusion of an elephant tusk alongside the tiger skin, suggesting the character’s power and impunity feel contrived. 'The public wouldn’t tolerate such injustice,' he said, adding that this undermines the film’s emotional stakes.

Another critic, Blue Sattai Maran, echoed concerns about originality. He described the plot as a recycled story, possibly lifted from a Malayalam film or even an English source, calling it a 'dead' narrative. He criticized the filmmakers for not reimagining the material with fresh context, especially given the political angle involving a corrupt MLA.

Maran also expressed disappointment that the film failed to build tension effectively. While the hero’s journey toward retaliation was expected, the payoff felt underwhelming. 'It just didn’t land,' he said, calling it a missed opportunity to deliver a compelling revenge tale.

Despite the critiques, both reviewers acknowledged the film’s technical strengths. Particularly the fight choreography by Peter Hein and the production design. Still, the consensus leans toward caution: 'You can watch it once, but don’t expect much more.'

The film’s box office performance remains to be seen, but early reviews suggest it may struggle to connect with audiences seeking coherence in high-stakes thrillers.
