On his talk show, the actor traced a Kangana Ranaut film back to a decades-old memory of his wife travelling solo after their wedding.
It started, oddly enough, with Kangana Ranaut. A mention of her 2013 film Queen on the sets of India Ke Top 1%: The Anil Kapoor Show sent Anil Kapoor down memory lane, and what came out was a small, funny confession about his own marriage.
The conversation had turned to travelling solo when Anil brought up Sunita. "Sunita akele gayi thi honeymoon par, main saath mein nahi gaya tha," he said, admitting his wife had gone on their honeymoon by herself, without him.
He didn't leave it at the confession. Anil circled back to the Queen reference and turned it into a compliment. "Sunita hi meri Queen hai, aur hamesha rahegi," he said, calling his wife his own Queen, always.
No further detail was offered on where Sunita went, why Anil couldn't make it, or how long after the wedding this happened. The anecdote surfaced as one of those personal digressions the show is known for, where a general topic pulls out an old family story before the conversation moves on.
Anil and Sunita have been married since 1984. Three kids came out of that marriage, Sonam Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor and Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, and over four decades the couple has talked about their relationship in bits and pieces across interviews, never as a grand narrative, always as these small asides.
That's rather the point of India Ke Top 1%. It's built around Anil chatting with contestants and guests, and the format keeps nudging him toward personal territory he might not otherwise wander into on a film promo circuit. A CEO appeal for a jobless contestant last week, a honeymoon story this week. The show clearly likes him loose.
The upcoming episode airs this weekend at 8 PM on Star Plus, with a JioHotstar stream running alongside it. Whether Anil offers more honeymoon trivia or moves on to the next contestant's story is anyone's guess till then.
For now, the internet has a new favourite Anil Kapoor soundbite, filed somewhere between wholesome and mildly bewildering. Married since 1984, and this is the first time the honeymoon math has come up in public. Fans will want the rest of that story, and Anil, going by the show's format, might just tell it if someone asks the right question next.
