The pregnant actress skipped last week's London event on doctor's orders but turned up in Prabal Gurung for the film's home-turf debut alongside Dakota Johnson.
Anne Hathaway didn't bother hiding it. At the New York premiere of Verity on Tuesday night, the actress showed up in a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung gown, black shredded chiffon with floral beading and a sweetheart neckline, cut close enough to make her third pregnancy the loudest thing on the carpet.
The event was held at AMC Lincoln Square 13. Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett walked alongside her, the three leads finally together in front of cameras for a film that's been building toward this release for months.
Hathaway sat this one out for weeks, actually. She and her team told Just Jared she'd stayed in New York rather than fly to London for the film's premiere there last week, doing press remotely instead while Johnson and Hartnett handled the overseas leg. Pregnancy travel, presumably, called the shots on that one.
Also on the carpet: co-star Ismael Cruz Cordova, director Michael Showalter, screenwriter Nick Antosca, and Colleen Hoover herself, whose 2018 novel the whole thing is built on. Hartnett's wife, Tamsin Egerton, came along too.
A thriller about ghostwriting gone wrong
For anyone who hasn't read the book, here's the pitch. Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired by Jeremy Crawford, played by Hartnett, to finish the remaining books in a series written by his wife, Verity, played by Hathaway. Verity can't write anymore after what the film calls a mysterious accident. While staying at the Crawford house to dig through research material, Lowen stumbles on an unpublished manuscript that turns out to be something closer to a confession.
Hoover's novel has spent years near the top of BookTok recommendation lists, which is doing a lot of the film's pre-release heat. A trailer and poster drop this month only added to that.
Hathaway's pregnancy has become its own subplot in the coverage, honestly, sometimes threatening to outrun the actual movie. But that's what happens when a lead actress shows up eight-plus months along in a gown built to show it, not hide it.
The bigger question is whether Verity's slow-burn, book-club energy translates into an opening weekend. Hoover adaptations have had mixed luck on screen before. This one has three recognisable names and a marketing push that's leaned hard into the mystery-thriller angle rather than the romance readers associate with the source material.
Verity opens in theatres on October 2. Whether the buzz around Hathaway's carpet look converts into ticket sales is a separate story, and one the weekend numbers will answer soon enough.
