Atlee was there as a guest, not a director with a stake in the film. But by the end of his speech at the audio launch of Pathaa, it sounded a lot like a job application he wished he'd filed years ago.

The Jawan director was the chief guest at the trailer and music launch of Pathaa, the Vijay Sethupathi-starrer directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan with music by Sai Abhyankkar. Somewhere between the formalities, he turned the conversation to Lijomol Jose, the Kerala actress who shapes the film, and didn't hold back.

"When I worked on Mersal, I looked at Nithya Menen and thought, how is this girl acting like this," Atlee said, according to Filmibeat Tamil. "I felt that same thing watching Deepika in Raakka. Now I feel it watching Lijomol. She's an actress who leaves you stunned. She needs to go on to bigger things. I feel like I missed out on her."

That's a specific kind of compliment. Atlee has directed exactly the two actresses he name-dropped, at very different points in his career, and putting Lijomol in that company is him saying she belongs in his own filmography somewhere down the line. He didn't announce a project. He didn't need to. The subtext did the work.

Lijomol's own arc backs up the flattery. She debuted opposite Fahadh Faasil in Maheshinte Prathikaram back in 2016, a film that turned into an instant calling card in Malayalam cinema. Tamil audiences got their first look at her in Sasi's Sivappu Manjal Pachai, where she ran through anger, love and grief in the same film and made all three land. Jai Bhim, where she played Sengeni, is the one that actually built her a name outside Kerala. Gentlewoman and Nooru Saami followed, both adding to a reputation for picking roles that ask something of her.

Pathaa is her latest bet in Tamil, and it's a bigger one than usual given who's headlining it. Vijay Sethupathi plays the lead, with Tharaneetharan directing and Sai Abhyankkar scoring the music. The film opens October 1.

Whether Atlee's comments translate into an actual collaboration is anyone's guess right now. He didn't hint at a script or a role, just admiration voiced out loud at someone else's event. But directors don't usually compare an actress to two of their own leading ladies unless the thought's been sitting there a while.

For Lijomol, the timing couldn't be better. A high-profile Tamil release ten days out, and now a filmmaker of Atlee's standing publicly wondering why he hasn't worked with her yet. Pathaa hits screens October 1. What happens after that endorsement is the more interesting question.
