The 2019 blockbuster returned to Indian screens on Friday with a doctored final scene and three new stingers that push straight into next year's Avengers: Doomsday.
SPOILERS ahead, obviously. Avengers Endgame: Encore hit Indian screens on Friday, and Marvel didn't just slap a bonus reel onto a seven-year-old film. It went back into the ending itself.
The re-release opens with a video greeting from Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans thanking audiences for coming back, closing with Endgame's famous line, "We love you 3000." Bollywood Hungama, which caught an early IMAX show in South Mumbai, reported that the packed hall responded the way you'd expect: someone yelled "Avengers," and thirty-odd voices came back with "Assemble." Seven years on, and that still works.
Most of the three-hour runtime is the film you already know by heart. The pre-climax portal sequence still gets a reaction. Captain America still says the line. But the ending has been touched, and that's the part worth talking about.
The dance gets interrupted
Endgame originally closed on Steve Rogers dancing with Peggy Carter, the life he chose over the fight. Encore starts on the exact same shot. Then someone knocks. Peggy answers. It's Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, telling her he's there to help both of them. Steve's face says he wasn't expecting this any more than the audience was.
According to Bollywood Hungama's account, it's a genuinely unusual move for a studio re-release, altering one of the MCU's most quoted endings rather than just tacking something on after it. It leaves you with questions Marvel clearly wants you carrying into Doomsday: why Loki, why now, and what exactly Steve's decision to stay in the past has to do with whatever's coming.
Three scenes, one very bad day for Bruce Banner
The mid and post-credit stretch runs three sequences deep. First up: Bruce Banner, holed up in an underground bunker working on a gamma-suppression fix after his recent Hulk troubles. The power cuts. A voice says it's come to collect him. It's Doctor Doom, voiced by Robert Downey Jr though never fully shown on screen. Banner starts to transform, roars, and when the feed comes back he's gone. Just a glowing green sigil on the floor.
Next, the Time Variance Authority. Mobius, O.B. And Casey are tracking the multiverse when they spot Earth-10005, the Fox X-Men universe, on a collision course with another reality and both sides firing on each other to avoid the crash. Then more alarms. Then thousands more. O.B.'s line, as reported, sums it up: "The multiverse is collapsing." It's the clearest signal yet that the X-Men are walking into Doomsday's mess.
The last scene is the quiet one. Endgame's theatrical cut famously ended not on a stinger but on the sound of a hammer, a callback to Tony Stark building his first suit in a cave. Encore keeps the sound and finally shows the hands. It's Victor Von Doom, forging the mask everyone's been waiting to see since Downey's casting broke.
Avengers: Doomsday is still a year out. What Marvel's done here is turn a nostalgia re-release into required viewing before then, spoilers already circulating online or not.
