Banks Steps Into Karen Read’s Shoes in Amazon’s True Crime Series

Elizabeth Banks is set to portray Karen Read in Amazon Prime Video’s new eight-episode true crime series, a project inspired by the real-life murder trial that gripped Massachusetts and sparked national debate. The case centers on the 2022 death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe, found dead in a snowstorm, with his girlfriend, Karen Read, becoming the focal point of a high-profile prosecution and subsequent retrial.

According to Variety, the series will explore not just the legal proceedings but the broader societal reaction — how suspicion spread, how communities fractured, and how public belief often outpaces evidence. Justin Noble is writing, showrunning, and executive producing under Warner Bros. Television, with Banks also serving as an executive producer through her Brownstone Productions banner.

The project draws from the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast titled Karen, which helped bring renewed attention to the case. Banks, who grew up in Massachusetts, has spoken about the personal resonance of the story. In a statement, she said the case “divided families, friends, and entire towns” during her youth, and that the questions it raises go far beyond one courtroom: “why we choose the stories we believe, and what happens when trust in our institutions breaks down.” She praised Noble’s approach, calling it respectful of both the complexity of events and the emotional toll on those involved.
