Twenty-two days in, and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has rewritten the Kerala box office record book.

The Nivin Pauly rom-com has crossed 130 crore gross within the state, according to trade numbers reported by Koimoi, edging past Vaazha 2's Kerala tally to claim the industry hit title. That's the tag Mollywood reserves for whichever film sits on top of the Kerala chart, and Vaazha 2 held it from its April release right up until Friday.

Online, the reaction has been a mix of pride and mild anxiety. One widely shared post put Vaazha 2's Kerala gross at 129.55 crore before Bethlehem Kudumba Unit went past it, and fans have been calling the film by its shorthand nickname, Kudumbastan, in celebration posts all week. There's also a strain of caution in the chatter, people wondering aloud whether this kind of overnight box office stardom sets an unfair bar for whoever's next in line.

The film isn't just clearing state records either. Koimoi reports it's only the fourth Malayalam release since the 2000s to cross 80 lakh footfalls, trailing just Narasimham, Pulimurugan and Vaazha 2 on that specific metric. That's rarefied company for any film, let alone one that opened as a rom-com in a season crowded with bigger-ticket action fare.

The bigger number

On its fourth Friday, the film added 2.5 crore net in India, running on roughly 1,400 screens, a number that would usually signal a film winding down but here reads as a film still holding shape a month out. The India net total now stands at 137.95 crore, which works out to about 162.78 crore gross domestically.

Overseas collections have been just as steady, with the film's international gross at 131.75 crore per the same trade tracking. Add it up and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit's worldwide total comes in at 294.53 crore, a whisker away from the 300-crore mark. Cross that, and the film would also go past Lokah: Chapter 1's worldwide number, adding a second scalp to what's already been a landmark run.

Director Girish AD's film is produced by Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran, running under the joint banners of Fahadh Faasil and Friends, Bhavana Studios and Working Class Hero, a production pedigree that's become something of a quality stamp in Malayalam cinema over the last few years. The cast includes Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan, Suresh Krishna and Vinay Forrt alongside Pauly.

With the 300-crore worldwide mark and the Lokah comparison both within reach, the next few days of collections matter more than the ones that got it here. Kerala's already decided its verdict. The rest of the tally is just catching up.
