Twenty-two days. That's all it took for Bethlehem Kudumba Unit to rewrite Kerala box office history.

The Nivin Pauly starrer has crossed 130 crore gross within the state, pushing past Vaazha 2's Kerala tally to grab the industry hit tag, the informal but closely tracked title reserved for whichever film sits at the top of Kerala's box office charts. Vaazha 2, an April release, had held that spot for months. It doesn't anymore.

And the film isn't slowing down to celebrate. On its fourth Friday, still running on 1400 screens, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit added another 2.5 crore net in India. That takes its net total in the country to 137.95 crore, which works out to roughly 162.78 crore gross. Add in an overseas gross of 131.75 crore and the worldwide number stands at 294.53 crore, inching toward the 300 crore mark.

Get there, and the film would also slide past Lokah: Chapter 1's total, giving Malayalam cinema back-to-back milestones in the same year.

A rare footfall number

Box office in Kerala isn't only measured in crores. Footfalls matter just as much, arguably more, in an industry where ticket prices don't always mirror what's happening in Hyderabad or Mumbai. On that count too, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has landed somewhere unusual. It's only the fourth Malayalam film since the 2000s to cross 80 lakh footfalls, trailing Narasimham, Pulimurugan and Vaazha 2, and now sitting right alongside them in a very short list.

That's the company the film is keeping four weeks in. Girish AD directs, and the production credits read like a who's who of the industry's newer power players: Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran produced it together, under the banners of Fahadh Faasil and Friends, Bhavana Studios and Working Class Hero. Besides Nivin Pauly, the cast includes Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan, Suresh Krishna and Vinay Forrt.

What's notable is the shape of the run. This isn't a film that opened big and coasted on nostalgia or a festival weekend. It's in its fourth weekend and still pulling numbers that would count as a solid opening for most releases. Social media chatter around the film has largely tracked the same story, with trade watchers flagging the Kerala gross crossing Vaazha 2's reported 129.55 crore figure as the moment the industry hit tag changed hands.

The next number to watch is 300 crore worldwide. At the current pace, that's not far off. Whether Bethlehem Kudumba Unit can also close the gap on Lokah: Chapter 1's total, and whether its fifth weekend holds up the way the fourth has, will decide just how far up Malayalam cinema's all-time list this one finally settles.
