The Girish A.D. film, which crossed ₹325 crore in theatres, now holds a 2026 record for non-Hindi titles on JioHotstar and an Ormax Power Rating of 92.
Three days. 5.4 million views. That's what Bethlehem Kudumba Unit did on JioHotstar between October 2 and the end of its opening weekend, and according to trade numbers cited by Telugu Filmibeat, no other non-Hindi Indian film has streamed that fast in 2026.
The film didn't need the hype machine to get here. Girish A.D.'s romantic comedy-drama opened in theatres on August 21 with zero pre-release noise, the kind of release that lives or dies on word of mouth in the first 48 hours. This one lived. By the time its theatrical run wound down, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit had grossed more than ₹325 crore worldwide, landing among the highest-grossing Malayalam films ever made.
Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju carry the film as the lead pair, and the production side reads like a who's who of the Malayalam new wave: Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran all produced it. That's three names associated with the kind of writing-first, performance-led cinema that's been quietly reshaping Malayalam box office math for a few years now. This film just put a number on it.
The Ormax numbers back it up
It isn't only box office math and streaming counters telling this story. The film scored 92 on the Ormax Power Rating, a measure that tracks audience recall and goodwill rather than just footfalls. Ormax data, as reported by Filmibeat, also places Bethlehem Kudumba Unit as the most popular theatrical release across every Indian language in 2026 so far. That's not a small claim given how packed the release calendar has been this year across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
What makes the OTT run notable is that it isn't a given. Plenty of films clean up in theatres and then land flat the moment they hit a streaming home, especially once the novelty of a big-screen outing wears off. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit hasn't had that problem. The film is currently streaming on JioHotstar in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi, and going by the weekend numbers, audiences outside Kerala are showing up for it in the same language they'd normally skip a dubbed Malayalam film in.
For a film that opened without a single trailer-drop controversy or star-vehicle marketing push, that's the real story here, not the record itself but how it got there. Mouth publicity did the heavy lifting in theatres. Now it looks like it's doing the same on a streaming platform, where algorithms usually decide what gets watched.
The question now is whether the 5.4 million number holds as a floor or a ceiling. JioHotstar hasn't put out a second-week figure yet, and until it does, nobody knows if Bethlehem Kudumba Unit was a weekend spike or the start of a longer streaming run.
