Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is finally getting its digital date. Girish AD's rom-com, which turned into one of the biggest Malayalam hits in years, drops on JioHotstar starting October 2, and it'll stream in more than one language, Telugu included.

That's a big deal for a film that's still doing business on the big screen. Weeks after release, BKU is reportedly pulling decent numbers in theatres even now, which isn't something you can say about most films by the time their OTT window opens up.

The scale of what it's pulled off is worth sitting with. BKU became the first Malayalam film to cross Rs 150 crore within Kerala itself, a number that used to belong to pan-India blockbusters, not home-market collections alone. It went on to become the fastest Malayalam film to hit the Rs 300 crore mark outrunning whatever benchmark Mollywood had set for itself before this.

Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju lead the film, backed by a supporting cast that reads like a who's who of dependable Malayalam character actors: Sangeeth Prathap, Vinay Forrt, Suresh Krishna, Bindu Panicker, Srinda, Roshan Shanavas and Meenakshy Raveendran all show up in the ensemble. Girish AD, who's built a name for himself with breezy, character-driven comedies, directs.

The production lineage is the kind of Malayalam cinema pedigree that gets trade circles talking on its own. Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran have produced the film through Bhavana Studios, three names whose combined filmography reads like a shorthand for the last decade of Malayalam cinema's creative high point. Vishnu Vijay scores the music, Ajmal Sabu handles the camera, and Akash Joseph Varghese has cut the film together.

With the streaming date locked, attention now shifts to how BKU performs once it's away from theatres. A film that's already rewritten Kerala's box office charts doesn't need OTT to prove anything commercially, but the digital run will still be watched closely, both for what it does on JioHotstar and for whether it travels beyond the Malayalam-speaking audience once the Telugu version goes up alongside it.

Online chatter has already tagged BKU as the next big industry hit, and given the numbers behind it, that's not exactly a stretch. Whether the film holds that conversation once it's sitting on a streaming app next to everything else releasing that week is the part nobody can answer yet. October 2 will start telling us.
