Eighteen days in, and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit still hasn't slowed down. The Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju starrer added roughly Rs 5.50 crore globally on Day 18, taking its worldwide theatrical gross to Rs 273 crore, according to trade estimates reported by Pinkvilla. Of that total, Rs 120.75 crore has come from Kerala alone.
The pace is what's turning heads here, not just the total. Pinkvilla notes the film took just 17 days to beat L2 Empuraan's record, which puts it, per the outlet's tracking, at the second-highest-grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office. It's now closing in on Lokah Chapter One: Chandra's global number, and if the current trend holds, it should get there within days.
Kerala is where the race gets specific. Pinkvilla's estimates suggest the film will pass Lokah's home-state cume by the end of Tuesday, which would make it the second-biggest grosser in Kerala history. The bigger prize sits just behind that. Vaazha 2's lifetime Kerala collection is expected to fall by the end of this week, and if it does, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit picks up the All-Time Blockbuster tag in the state.
Worth flagging that these are trade tracking figures, not certified numbers, and Pinkvilla's own disclaimer says as much. Nobody's handing out a plaque here. But even accounting for the usual caveats around unofficial estimates, an 18-day run doing this kind of business in Malayalam cinema doesn't happen often.
So what happens next? Pinkvilla expects the film to keep its legs for a couple more weeks, which sounds reasonable given the trajectory. The real variable is streaming. South Indian films typically head to OTT about four weeks after theatrical release, and if Bethlehem Kudumba Unit sticks to that window, it's cutting short a run that still has box office left in the tank. A delayed digital release would let it chase records for longer. A standard one means the makers are leaving money on the table just as the film is peaking.
Either way, the next seven days settle two things. Whether Vaazha 2's record falls, and whether the makers blink on the OTT date. Kerala audiences, going by the numbers so far, don't look like they're done showing up.
