Bigg Boss Tamil has never done this before. On the opening episode of Season 10, host Vijay Sethupathi called three contestants to the stage together and told them only one thing mattered: audience votes, decided on the spot.

The three were Lakshmi Priya, known for playing Kaveri in the Vijay TV serial Mahanadi, Shadhika, who has appeared in both Mahanadi and Pandian Stores 2, and Shabnam, remembered for Deivamagal and Raja Rani. All three stood on stage as Sethupathi laid out the rule. Whoever among them pulled the most votes would walk through the door. The other two would not.

That's already a departure from how this show usually runs. Normally contestants get their moment with the host, a bit of banter, an introduction, and then they're sent inside one by one. Season 10 skipped straight to conflict on day one.

Audience members in the studio were handed a special remote with three buttons, one for each contestant, and the voting happened live. According to Filmibeat Tamil, Lakshmi Priya pulled the highest count and walked into the house first. Shadhika came second and also made it in.

Shabnam did not.

She got the fewest votes of the three, and Sethupathi eliminated her right there on stage. No walk down the corridor, no first look at the house, nothing. Filmibeat Tamil's report calls it the first time in the show's Tamil run that a contestant has been eliminated before setting foot inside, cut at the threshold rather than voted out weeks later by housemates.

It's a brutal way to open a season, and it says something about where Bigg Boss Tamil wants to take the format this year. Elimination used to be the show's slow burn, weeks of nominations, task performances, house politics wearing people down until the audience picked who stays. Putting three actresses through a public vote before the cameras even get inside the house compresses all of that into a five-minute stretch on premiere night.

Whether that reads as bold format innovation or just cruelty dressed up as television will depend on who's watching, and there's already chatter building about whether Shabnam deserved a shot inside the house regardless of the vote count. She had real credits behind her, Deivamagal and Raja Rani weren't small shows.

For Lakshmi Priya and Shadhika, the season starts now, inside the house, with fourteen or so weeks of the usual grind ahead of them. For Shabnam, it's over before it began, and Bigg Boss Tamil has a new kind of exit to explain to a season's worth of contestants who haven't gone in yet.

What happens next is the bigger question. If this stage-vote format returns for later entries, expect the show's usual slow-build tension to look very different from here on.
