Bipasha Basu doesn't think she just survived being different in Bollywood. She thinks she changed what different meant.

In a new interview with Elle India, the actor said the industry of the early 2000s ran on petite frames, fair skin and delicate features, and she simply didn't fit that mould. Tall, athletic, tanned, she was the outlier. "I don't think women with more muscle tone were very acceptable as actresses," she said. "But I think I started the trend, and I started preaching 'love yourself' to everyone because I realised it's not just about looking good. It's more intrinsic. You need to be healthy."

That's a big claim to stake for herself, but the timing isn't accidental.

An old clip of Mrunal Thakur has been doing the rounds, pulled from her Kumkum Bhagya days on television, where she's chatting with co-star Arjit Taneja about physical preferences in a partner. "Do you want to marry a girl who is manly with muscles? Go marry Bipasha," Mrunal said in the clip. "I am far better than Bipasha, ok." The line has aged badly online, and the pile-on pushed Mrunal to apologise on social media once the clip started circulating again.

Bollywood Hungama's report doesn't say whether Bipasha's Elle interview was recorded before or after the clip resurfaced, so it's worth being careful about calling this a direct response. But the conversation she's having, about muscle tone, acceptability and who gets to look a certain way on screen, is exactly the one the clip reopened.

Bipasha didn't stop at fitness. Asked about ageing, she was blunt.

"Ageing is like the biggest sin that you can commit," she said, before adding that she likes who she is now more than who she was in her twenties. "What other people are doing, it's their call. I don't judge that. But for me, I'm never going to fall into the pressure of wanting to look younger than what I am."

She also flagged something sharper about the fitness culture she says she helped kick off, wondering aloud whether people exercise today because they've understood the health benefits or simply to chase a look. No easy answer there, and she didn't pretend to have one.

Bipasha has largely stayed off the big screen lately. Bollywood Hungama has separately reported she's set to return with Hansal Mehta's Barabanki. Whether this interview lines up with that comeback push or is just her talking her mind, as she tends to, is the next thing to watch.
