Netflix has greenlit a new limited series spinoff in the Bridgerton universe, focusing on the early life of Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The project, still untitled but widely expected to be named Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story, marks the next expansion of the franchise under Shondaland’s long-term deal with Netflix. Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini are co-showrunning and writing the series — Rhimes’ first full writing role since Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which she co-created and executive produced. Tom Verica, who directed and executive produced Queen Charlotte, returns in the same capacity. Betsy Beers, a longtime creative partner at Shondaland, is also an executive producer. The story will be based on Violet In Bloom, a novella by Julia Quinn that details the love affair between young Violet Ledger and Edmund Bridgerton. Connie Jenkins-Greig, who portrayed teenage Violet in Queen Charlotte, may reprise the role, though casting has not yet been confirmed. Ruth Gemmell plays the older version of Lady Violet in the main Bridgerton series. The announcement follows months of speculation after Queen Charlotte’s 2023 success, which debuted at No. 1 in 91 countries and sparked renewed interest in prequels for other key characters. While Lady Danbury was another strong contender, it was Violet’s arc, particularly her emotional journey and eventual union with Edmund. That emerged as the most likely candidate for a standalone series. Season 5 of Bridgerton, currently in production in London, centers on Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza). The franchise remains a cornerstone of Netflix’s global strategy, with Seasons 1 and 3 still ranking among the platform’s Most Popular English TV shows. The streamer even built a dedicated studio space in the UK to support Shondaland’s work. No release date has been announced.
