Clayface Could Hit HBO Max By Early January

Warner Bros' DC body horror film is still theatrical-only for now, but recent release patterns suggest a digital rental window within weeks and a streaming premiere before the DCU's next big year kicks off.

Clayface is still a theaters-only watch, and if you want to see James Gunn and Peter Safran's horror detour for DC Studios right now, a cinema is your only option. But going by Warner Bros' own recent track record, that's not going to last long.

According to Screen Rant, the film cost somewhere around $30 million to make, a figure that puts it closer to a mid-budget studio horror release than a typical comic book tentpole. That's deliberate. Lower budgets mean a lower bar for profitability, and horror as a genre tends to travel well regardless of star power, so DC Studios appears to be betting that Clayface recoups fast and proves the studio can do more than cape movies.

Warner Bros. Generally holds films in theaters for 45 days before releasing them on digital platforms to rent or buy. Go by that number alone and Clayface lands on PVOD around December 7, 2026. But that window has been flexible all year. Superman moved to digital in just 35 days, reportedly so it could be available before Peacemaker Season 2 premiered. Supergirl, which didn't perform as well theatrically, got pushed to digital after only 32 days.

Screen Rant notes that WB's average turnaround across its 2026 slate has been close to 29 days, and the most common gap has been 32. Apply either number to Clayface and you're looking at a digital release somewhere between November 26 and November 29, assuming the film's box office run doesn't force a change in either direction.

The streaming question is the bigger one for most viewers, though, since HBO Max is where every DCU title eventually ends up, Superman and Supergirl included, alongside shows like Creature Commandos, Peacemaker and Lanterns. Based on how those two films moved from digital to streaming, a roughly 70-day gap from theatrical release would put Clayface on HBO Max around January 1, 2027, give or take a week or two.

There's a case for an earlier date too. If the PVOD window ends up closer to 25 or 32 days, Warner Bros. Could still pull the HBO Max premiere forward to land somewhere over the Christmas period, when a lot of people are at home scrolling for something to watch. A grim body-horror movie about a disfigured actor turning into living clay isn't exactly a holiday pick, but the audience logic still holds.

None of these dates are confirmed by Warner Bros. Itself, and the studio hasn't announced either a digital or streaming date for Clayface. What's clear is the pattern: theatrical window, then digital, then HBO Max, usually inside ten weeks. Where Clayface lands on that timeline now depends entirely on how it performs at the box office over the coming fortnight.
