Daayra has crossed Rs 5 crore, but nobody at the trade desks is throwing confetti over it.
The Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer added Rs 0.37 crore on Wednesday, taking its India total to roughly Rs 5.06 crore after six days in theatres, according to Bollywood Hungama's numbers. That's a 17.78% drop from Tuesday's Rs 0.45 crore, and it fits a pattern the film has struggled to break since its opening weekend.
Daayra opened on a Friday with Rs 0.94 crore, which is soft by any measure for a film carrying two recognisable leads. It did pick up over the weekend, Rs 1.41 crore on Saturday and Rs 1.39 crore on Sunday, closing the first three days at Rs 3.74 crore. Then came the weekday reality check. Monday brought in Rs 0.47 crore, Tuesday another Rs 0.45 crore, and now Wednesday's Rs 0.37 crore.
Each weekday number has been smaller than the last, and the drops between them haven't been dramatic, they've just been steady and unforgiving. A film that can't hold its Monday-to-Wednesday floor rarely finds a second wind on the following weekend either. Whether Daayra manages any kind of Friday-to-Sunday bump this week will tell us if it has a life beyond a quiet opening week or if it quietly fades out.
The other end of the scale
Contrast that with what's happening to Hanuman Ansh, a film now on Day 48 and still adding real money. It collected Rs 3.43 crore on Wednesday, a 26.08% dip from Tuesday's Rs 4.64 crore, but even a dip of that size on Day 48 is the kind of number most new releases would take on a good weekday. The India total now stands at approximately Rs 279.33 crore.
That run has been one of this year's genuine box office stories. Hanuman Ansh had a strong seventh weekend too, Rs 4.66 crore on Friday, Rs 8.66 crore on Saturday and Rs 12.03 crore on Sunday, and it briefly became the No. 1 film in the country across all languages on September 1, on Day 26 of its run, per Bollywood Hungama. It's now about Rs 20.67 crore away from the Rs 300 crore mark, and at its current pace, that milestone looks like a matter of days rather than weeks.
So you've got two films sharing screen space right now, one limping through its opening week, the other refusing to leave seven weeks in. Whether Daayra can claw back any momentum this Friday, and how soon Hanuman Ansh actually crosses Rs 300 crore, are the two numbers worth watching heading into the weekend.
