Dakota Johnson turned up for the New York premiere of Verity on Tuesday in custom Calvin Klein, and she left with a better quote than most stars manage on a red carpet.
Speaking to Extra, Johnson said her co-star Anne Hathaway told her she looked like a "sexy icicle" in the outfit. Fair description, honestly. But the more interesting bit came when she was asked about working with Hathaway on the film.
"I think we both bring out the playful and naughty side of each other," Johnson said. "She's so funny, so smart, so kind. We had the best time making this movie."
That's not the usual junket line about a co-star being a joy to work with. It's specific, it's a little cheeky, and it lines up with how both actors have talked about the shoot in bits and pieces elsewhere.
Johnson wasn't alone on the carpet. Hathaway walked it too, reportedly in Prada, and Josh Hartnett rounded out the trio of leads making their first joint public appearance for the project. Verity has been building buzz for a while now, partly on the strength of its cast and partly because thriller adaptations of this scale don't come around every month.
The premiere itself was covered heavily on style terms. Johnson's look got called a "modern flapper" moment by outlets tracking the carpet, all sequins and structure, and it's the kind of custom Calvin Klein piece designers build a season around. Whether that translates to box office numbers is a separate question, but premieres like this are as much about signalling a film's arrival as they are about the film itself.
What's notable is how little of the premiere chatter has actually been about the plot. Johnson has described Verity as intense, which tracks with what's known about the source material, but neither she nor Hathaway have gone into specifics about tone or twists in what's been reported so far.
That's probably by design. Studios sitting on a book adaptation this well known don't want plot details leaking out through red carpet interviews, they want the cast chemistry doing the marketing for them. And going by Johnson's comments, that chemistry is real, whatever it ends up looking like on screen.
A wider release date and reviews will tell us whether Verity earns the attention its cast is generating right now. For the moment, the internet has Johnson's quote, Hathaway's icicle line, and a premiere carpet that did its job.
