Tom Cruise isn’t saving the world in Digger — he’s playing an actor rehearsing a play about a man who did. And that twist? It hits like a methane blast. The film, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and released under Warner Bros., has just dropped globally, and audiences are still reeling from its layered reality.

What looks like a high-stakes climate thriller, Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a billionaire oil baron whose reckless drilling triggers a Greenland ice shelf collapse. Is actually a theatrical rehearsal set in the present day. The entire movie unfolds backstage at a theater, where Cruise plays Curtis Markson, an actor portraying Digger.

The real shock comes when the director, Sophie Wilde, reveals that the story isn’t fiction: Digger Rockwell was real, and the disaster he caused, the one that sent a chunk of ice the size of Maryland toward Europe. Actually happened 25 years ago. The play is a reckoning. A satire.

A memorial. Jesse Plemons plays Kenny, Digger’s nephew, who funded the production not for profit but to confront the legacy of his family’s greed. He’s also the one who tracks down Curtis’ missing daughter during the final act. The film ends with the cast finishing their curtain call.

Then, the alarm sounds. The doors open. And the audience sees what the world looks like now, gas masks on, skies choked. No explanation.

Just aftermath. Critics are split: Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 51%, but audiences love it (71%). Box office? Not so much.

Early reports suggest it could lose hundreds of millions. But the real question isn’t whether it’ll make money. It’s whether we’re ready to watch ourselves on stage, again and again, until we finally learn how to stop.
