The rapper teams up with Sachin-Jigar and Amitabh Bhattacharya for his first Hindi film song, landing in Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan's spy comedy releasing October 23.
Emiway Bantai just added a new line to his resume. The rapper's first Bollywood soundtrack credit, a track called Choozay, dropped Friday as part of Udta Teer, the Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan spy comedy headed to theatres on October 23.
Sachin-Jigar built the track, Amitabh Bhattacharya and Emiway wrote the lyrics together, and the vocals split between Emiway and Jigar Saraiya. It's out now on Sony Music India, and the video has all three of them on screen, Ayushmann included, doing what Koimoi described as capturing the song's playful energy with a dose of rap thrown into the mix.
For Emiway, this isn't a case of jumping at the first offer. He said he'd been approached for Bollywood projects before and none of them felt right until Udta Teer came along. "It clicked for me," he said, calling the song a chance to bring his sound into cinema without losing what makes his music his own.
Sachin-Jigar, who've worked with Bhattacharya on plenty of tracks over the years, said Emiway's "attitude and unmistakable flow" gave the composition a new dimension. Ayushmann, for his part, called it one of those songs that finds its way onto every playlist and stays there, crediting the mix of Emiway's rap style, the composers' musicality and Bhattacharya's writing for making it work.
Whether that enthusiasm translates to actual playlist dominance is the audience's call, not the cast's. But the pairing itself is a bit of a departure, a rapper known for his independent hustle and battle-rap roots sliding into a big-banner Dharma production.
Udta Teer itself sounds like it's not taking itself too seriously either. The plot, per Koimoi, follows a character named Bilal Ahmed, a Pakistani spy who loses his memory after arriving in India and ends up convinced he's a patriotic Indian counter-terrorism officer. It's the kind of premise built for exactly the chaos Choozay seems to be going for.
The film carries a sizeable supporting cast, Raghubir Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Gulshan Grover, Suhail Nayyar, Rahul Bose, Mukul Dev and Supriya Pilgaonkar among them. Akash Kaushik writes and directs, with Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment presenting the film, produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga and Achin Jain.
With three weeks left before release, Choozay is likely just the first taste of the album. Whether the rest of the soundtrack leans into this rap-meets-filmi hybrid or goes somewhere else entirely is something we'll find out as Udta Teer's promotional run picks up pace.
