A desert backdrop, a pack of actors out of character, and a caption that does all the work: "Mirzapur Phamily behind the scenes of #MirzapurTheMovie." That's the picture Excel Entertainment put out this week, days after the franchise made its jump from streaming to cinema screens.
The photo dump isn't a trailer or a poster drop. It's the studio pulling back the curtain now that the film is already running in theatres, giving fans a look at what happens when the cameras stop rolling on a franchise built on menace and blood-feuds in Purvanchal.
One shot puts Pankaj Tripathi, who plays Kaleen Bhaiya, next to Ali Fazal's Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu's Munna Bhaiya, with Jitendra Kumar and Abhishek Banerjee rounding out the group. They're posed together against sand and open sky, nothing like the interiors and gunfights the franchise is known for. Other frames show individual cast members in looser, more playful moments, the kind that don't usually make it past a WhatsApp group.
It's a small gesture but a deliberate one. Mirzapur built its audience on Amazon Prime Video over multiple seasons, and taking that world to theatres was reportedly producer Ritesh Sidhwani's call, a bet that a fandom raised on OTT would show up for a big screen and popcorn version of the same story. Once a film clears that theatrical hurdle, the BTS material becomes currency. It keeps the conversation alive between opening weekend and whatever comes next, whether that's a extended run, an OTT premiere down the line, or simply bragging rights within the ensemble.
Mirzapur: The Movie is directed by Gurmmeet Singh, written by Puneet Krishna, and produced by Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani as co-producers. Amazon MGM Studios co-presents. The cast beyond Tripathi, Fazal and Divyenndu includes Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi and Vikrant Massey, familiar faces from the show now sharing a marquee instead of a season poster.
Ali Fazal's Fukrey co-star Pulkit Samrat has already weighed in publicly, celebrating the film's success on social media, a sign that the industry is watching how this streaming-to-cinema experiment plays out. Whether Excel treats this as a one-off or the start of a pattern, folding TV-first franchises into theatrical releases, depends on what the numbers look like once the opening rush settles. For now, the studio is happy to let fans see the Phamily off-duty while the film keeps collecting at the box office.
