The actor's first Telugu outing since Pushpa comes with an SS Rajamouli production banner and a plot involving a ransom, a schoolgirl and actual magic.
Fahadh Faasil is back in Telugu cinema, and this time he's not playing the villain.
The trailer for his new film, Don't Trouble The Trouble, launched at a Hyderabad event on Monday, marking his first appearance in the language since the two-part Pushpa run, where he played the antagonist across both films. This one is a sharp turn away from that. Faasil plays Suri, described in the film as a man with fox-like instincts, someone who can sniff out easy money from a mile off but somehow never sees trouble coming until it's already knocking.
And trouble, in this case, arrives in the shape of a schoolgirl.
The trailer sets up Suri kidnapping a child named Divya, played by Ssara Palekar, with a ransom demand of one crore rupees. Except Divya isn't your average kidnap victim. She does magic, real magic apparently, and she tells Suri she once used it to make her own parents vanish. Now she wants his help getting them back. What follows, going by the trailer, is a mismatched pairing forced into an adventure neither of them signed up for.
It's a genre Telugu cinema doesn't attempt often, this blend of comedy and family fantasy with a kidnapping plot bolted on. The trailer leans on physical comedy from Faasil and whatever chemistry he's built with his young co-star, and there's a score running underneath that seems built to sell the magical stretches rather than the crime plot.
The film carries serious backing. SS Rajamouli presents it, with his son SS Karthikeya producing alongside Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni, the same production circle behind the Baahubali and RRR machinery. That's a heavyweight name to have on a smaller, genre-bending film, and it's likely to draw eyeballs that a debut director wouldn't normally get on his own.
Because this is a debut, at least behind the camera. Shashank Yelti directs, with Saurabh Sachdeva rounding out the cast in what's being described as a pivotal role, though the trailer keeps his part under wraps for now.
What the trailer does confirm is the release date. Don't Trouble The Trouble hits theatres on October 2, giving it roughly ten days to build momentum before it's actually tested at the box office. Whether audiences turn up for a magician-versus-kidnapper story from a first-time director, Rajamouli's name notwithstanding, is the real question the trailer can't answer. That one gets settled on opening weekend.
