Giada De Laurentiis has a toe problem and a premiere date closing in fast.
The chef, 56, is one of sixteen contestants on the new season of Dancing with the Stars, and on Sunday she posted an Instagram video showing off an injury from rehearsal. The toe, by her own description, is "quite purple" and swollen "all the way around." Her verdict on the toenail: gone. "I'm for sure gonna lose my toenail, I think," she said in the clip, before adding that the plan for tomorrow was simply to figure it out. "Part of the game," she said.
She captioned the post with a line that's basically the unofficial motto of every DWTS season: "You know what they say... No pain, no gain."
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba showed up in the comments with what amounts to a rite-of-passage stamp. "You are officially a dancer now," she wrote. Which, fair. Nobody on this show gets through a season without at least one body part filing a complaint.
De Laurentiis hasn't slowed down since. She's paired with Alan Bersten, who's carried a Mirrorball win before and has been a runner-up and a semifinalist besides, so the pro side of this partnership isn't short on credentials. On Wednesday, the two revealed their team name for the season: Team Aldente. Considering her day job, it writes itself, but it's a good bit anyway.
Season 35 premieres across two nights starting Tuesday, September 15, at 8 pm on ABC and Disney+, with the episodes hitting Hulu the following day. The roster this year has been bumped up to sixteen couples, the biggest field the show has run in a while, and De Laurentiis is sharing the ballroom with a genuinely odd mix of names. Tatyana Ali from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is in it. So is Bachelor alum Tyler Cameron, former Hanson member Taylor Hanson, actress Julia Stiles, comedian Connor Wood, Grey's Anatomy's Harry Shum Jr, Jimmy Kimmel Live! Mainstay Guillermo Rodríguez, and reality names including Ciara Miller, Maura Higgins, Jackson Olson and Sarah Jane Nader.
That's a lot of competing storylines for one season, and De Laurentiis's toe is now officially part of hers, days before she's even stepped on the actual competition floor. Whether the injury slows her routine down or just becomes a talking point during Tuesday's broadcast is the thing to watch. Either way, Team Aldente is showing up.
